Federal court sides with OpenAI in AI copyright lawsuit

November 8, 2024: Court Dismisses AI Copyright Lawsuit Against OpenAI - A federal court dismissed a copyright lawsuit against OpenAI by Raw Story Media and AlterNet Media. The lawsuit claimed OpenAI removed copyright management information (CMI) from articles used in AI training datasets, allegedly breaching the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The court ruled in favor of OpenAI, stating the real issue was compensation for article usage, not CMI removal. Raw Story and AlterNet can refile the case with revisions. OpenAI maintains its data usage practices are protected by fair use. Other similar lawsuits against OpenAI and Microsoft are ongoing.
