Google releases tech to watermark AI-generated text

October 23, 2024: Google Unveils AI Text Watermarking Tool - Google has launched SynthID Text, a freely available tool for watermarking AI-generated text, which can be downloaded from Hugging Face and Googles Responsible GenAI Toolkit. This tool subtly alters token probabilities to embed a watermark, allowing detection of AI-generated content while maintaining text quality. Although effective, it struggles with short, rewritten, or translated text and factual prompts. As governments consider mandatory AI content watermarking, SynthID could help reduce reliance on inaccurate AI detectors. With 90% of online content potentially synthetic by 2026, the urgency for such tools grows.
