OpenAI to Retire Costly GPT-4.5 from API - OpenAI is phasing out GPT-4.5, its largest AI model, from its API by July 14. Released in February, GPT-4.5 is being replaced by the more efficient and cost-effective GPT-4.1. While GPT-4.5 offered significant improvements, it failed to meet frontier-level benchmarks and was expensive to operate, costing up to $150 per million output tokens.
Despite its API removal, GPT-4.5 will still be available in ChatGPT's research preview for paid users. OpenAI aims to prioritize future AI model developments.
